Kinja'd!!!

Motor mounted, chain shortend and tensioned, test run performed.

It will gladly rev the tyres on a stand, but will judder/do heavy cogging when trying to start from a stand still. Unsure what next move is. Better gearing would be nice, the Brushless controller i have on the RC car won’t do much higher voltage, maybe just time to shell out for a proper DC motor?

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Seating position is a wee bit sketchy too, but it’s fiiiine.

Per a side note, my welding is getting somewhat better, especially the ones not made to the thin frame parts.

why didn’t you stick the motor behind the seat?

Considered, but weight distribution without anything was bad enough that you’d wheelie if you sat up straight. Would probably have balanced out with batteries up front fine, oh well, that for version 2.

Alternator as a motor? Might work better if you got an actual motor. It would probably move nicely if you use a starter motor.

I have some competitive robotics stuff that would be useful for you to at least look at. I will post vendors and links to parts when I get back to my pc.

Alright, first of all my favorite vendor. Andymark.com (would like you to guess the two first names of the founders?) Located in Kokomo Indiana these guys started their business catering to competitive robotics teams (FRC).

Item #1 Drive motor

http://www.andymark.com/CIM-Motor-p/am-0255.htm
Two of these things with around a 10 to 1 reduction will propel a 150 lb robot at around 20 feet per second with little issue. Legend has it they were used to power electric jacks on 5th wheel RVs. In any case they hold up to lots of abuse without too much issue.

Item #2 Speed Controller

http://www.andymark.com/product-p/am-3748.htm
PWM (Think RC whatever driven) can handle all the proverbial power you want to put to the motor.

Item #3 How are you driving this thing?

They make hubs and other such stuff if you want to go sprockets or if you want to go gears they carry those to. If you have a question, call them they are good people.

Have been looking at sourcing a decent sized DC motor instead, going the e-bike/scooter seems doable, but that’s motor, controller and then 36-48v battery pack which quickly goes out of budget for this little for-fun project.
The alternator runs as a 3 phase brushless, but brushes for exciting the rotor winding with DC, off an RC Car ESC. Maybe the solution is just way higher input voltage(currently 11.1v lipo).
